• The Moon Inn | Stoney Middleton - a short walk into the village, historic pub dating back to 1821 offering a cosy and dog friendly environment, with a great choice of homemade pub classics, burgers, pizzas and steaks all alongside scrumptious desserts, fine wines and local ales. There is a beer garden for the warmer months and is dog friendly

• The Miners Arms | Eyam - 25 minute walk or 5 minutes in the car, tucked away down a side street in the historic village of Eyam in this traditional pub built back in 1630 and has always been the hub of the village. Serving pub classics, children's menu, sandwiches and salads. You are able to grab a quick bite to eat in the bar or sit and relax in the restaurant. Pets are welcome.

• The Calver Arms | Calver- 20 minute walk or 3 minute drive, walking through the village you come to Calver crossroads and this great pub. Offering plenty of space and serving pub classics

• The Chequer's Inn | Froggatt - 6 minute drive, sitting beneath the picturesque Froggatt Edge this makes an ideal stop after a day exploring. With a changing menu to match the seasons to will get to experience the best of the local produce. Homemade food and a fantastic selection of wines / beers and gins. Dogs are welcome in the beer garden and a small room inside the pub.

• The Bridge Inn | Calver- 5 minute drive, open every day offering snacks and small plates, burgers, sandwiches, kid's meals and classic favourites. With a large beer garden overlooking the river making it a picturesque spot to sit and relax after a day exploring.

• The Derwentwater Arms | Calver - 5 minute drive, traditional pub tucked away in this pretty village, welcoming children, muddy boots and dogs it's a real family favourite. Serving pub classics, burgers and delicious hand crafted pies all using locally homegrown produce.

• The Prince of Wales | Baslow - 7 minute drive, a great village pub to stop at if out and about exploring the area, a warm and friendly atmosphere serving homemade food. Dogs are welcome in the bar area.

• The Bull's Head | Foolow - 6 minute drive, a popular pub in this quiet and peaceful village. With a lunch, evening and kids menu available and serving all your usual classics. Dogs are welcome in the bar.

• ​Village Green Cafe | Eyam - delicious home made recipes in this small but popular cafe. Enjoy breakfast, brunch, lunch and fabulous cakes. A great selection of coffees, teas hot chocolate and milkshakes are also available.

• Eyam Tea Rooms | Eyam - a popular tea room that welcomes bikers, muddy boots and dogs., with plenty of seating inside and outside, this is a great rest stop after a day exploring the peaks or edges. Serving hearty breakfasts, sandwiches, paninis,  toasties, jacket potatoes and an array of cakes. 

• The Eating House | Calver - small, independent cafe offering breakfasts, lunches, cakes and bakes.  A wide selection is available for all meal times. They also offer an eat at home option - where you can pre order a graze box, afternoon tea, cakes that can be collected by yourselves and enjoyed at your property. They do require 24 hrs notice in advance for these orders.

• The Yondermann | Wardlow Mires - licenced cafe set back from the busy A623 makes this a popular stop off for walkers / cyclists / or if driving by.  Wide selection of choices for breakfast, lunch with homemade cakes to be enjoyed too. 

• Cafe on the Green | Baslow - in the heart of the village offering tasty breakfasts, light lunches and delicious cakes and coffees.

• ​Curry Cottage | Stoney Middleton, in the renown  location called Lover's Leap you are welcome at this warm and friendly restaurant complete with a private dining room that is built into the cave. Offering a wide selection of authentic Indian cuisine including vegetarian options. You need to bring your own alcohol as it is not served on the premises.

• Stella's Kitchen | Eyam, treat yourself to a unique dinging experience in the comfort of Stella's home. Enjoy home cooked Afro-Caribbean food, booking is essential as there is limited space, but you will not be disappointed with this truly memorable experience.

• Fischer's | Baslow, award winning manor house restaurant set in a beautiful location. Relax and enjoy fine dining at its best, the dining room is classically set with white tablecloths and sparkling tableware. Homegrown and locally sourced produce are served in their lunch and inner menus. Definitely a place to visit if you are celebrating a special occasion.

• The Cavendish | Baslow, fine dining of the highest standard. Serving simple, yet imaginative food using locally sourced produce. There are a couple of stylish restaurants to choose to dine or why not book yourself a table in their busy kitchen and experience what a typical service looks like - we suggest to book well in advance. 

• The Merchant's Yard | Tideswell - 12 minute drive, once a former local builder's yard now transformed into a stylish and popular restaurant but still in keeping with its history with tools once used dotted around the building, adding history to the modern setting. Serving a lunch, dinner and Sunday Roast menu. Afternoon Teas are a firm favourite here too, if you only fancy stopping for a drink then try one of their wonderful cocktails.

• Sal's Italian | Tideswell, in the heart of the village you will find this family run restaurant offering authentic Italian food. They do not serve alcohol on the premises so you do need to bring your own, we do recommend to book.

• The Eating House | Calver - you are able to pick up gorgeous graze boxes, afternoon tea or cake box treats to then take back to your apartment. They do need 24 hrs notice and it is collection only.

• Hope Valley Pizza | Calver - will delivery locally over a certain amount. Huge selection of pizza choices alongside meal deals or kebabs. Open everyday apart from Monday and close at 9-9.30 so please check prior to booking. 

It is always best to check the websites for any seasonal opening times as some places do shut early  or close over the winter months.

Rock Climbing

Known for its abundance of differing Limestone climbs Stoney Middleton boasts 450+  it is an extremely popular place to tackle some of the best climbs in the area, attracting hundreds of keen climbers. Heading out of the village on the A623 towards Tideswell / Stockport, the main climbs are on the right-hand side of the road – with a layby close by to be able to park up easily. The roadside crags are impressive with buttresses up to 50m high and are known to be some of the hardest climbs in the world. There are many varying grades and only suitable for the most experienced climbers, and research is necessary before heading out. 

​Caving

Also located near to the best climbing spots are plenty of caves to explore, preplanning is vital as some entrances do not lead to anywhere. Many of the caves are impressive and extensive and do involve tight squeezes in places so definitely not for the inexperienced cavers- research is key. To name but a few the best ones to visit are Castle Buttress, Ivy Green, Cliffstile Vein, Fingals Cave, Carlswalk Cavern, Merlin Mine all in the village of Stoney Middleton– there are plenty more to explore and as a word of warning due to the numerous entrances no one should enter without the proper equipment, experience and pre planned knowledge.

​Heritage Trails

The heritage trails of Stoney Middleton lead you on a remarkable journey of discovery. Two short walks in and around the village, take in panoramic vistas of the stunning Peak District National Park, along with its rich and fascinating heritage. Quaint back streets, listed buildings, past industries, fascinating folklore and legends, along with famous crags and caves make these trails a must do. There is a detailed map which includes QR codes linking to further information and are available next door at The Cupola Visitor Centre.

​Visitor Centre & Tourist Information

The Cupola Visitor Centre houses a small, permanent 'Life in a Gorge Exhibition' which tells the remarkable story, beginning with the geological events that formed the dramatic limestone gorge which dominates the site, and in turn, lead to thousands of years of industrialisation, extracting the rich minerals that the stone contains. Within the Visitor Centre there are various information boards and video presentations covering all aspects of the village's heritage and history. Entrance to the exhibition is by donation and includes a free Heritage and trail Map of Stoney Middleton and Eyam.  Exhibition opening hours are 10am-4pm. Other tourist information and leaflets are also available, providing details for other local facilities in the area.

​​Mountain Biking

What better area to experience the amazing landscape and abundance of different routes that all lead from the doorstep, including Black Harry trails. The Peak District can cater for all biking abilities, whether you want a steady family ride, gentler lane rides or tough climbs and longer routes - have a good look at the area and then plan your route. Passing through many of the quaint villages tucked away – some even offering a welcome refreshment stop, you will struggle to know what to concentrate on whilst riding will it be the pavements or trails ahead of the stunning scenery all around you!  

​Coombs Dale

One of the lesser known dales in the Peak District, making it a real hidden gem. A limestone valley covering 230 acres, the hills are made of Carboniferous limestone, formed about 330 million years ago when Britain lay under a shallow tropical sea near the equator; many fossilised skeletons of tiny sea creatures can still be found in the rocks today. Entering the dale via tall Ash trees, it opens to a deep valley with steep-sided grassy slopes. Enjoy a gentle, scenic stroll, taking in the beautiful wildflowers and the various species of butterflies and birds. With the legacy of Black Harry, the highwayman, still present to this day, with Black Harry Gate standing in the dale at the end of Black Harry Lane. It is said that on dark nights galloping hooves can be heard over the moors - maybe this is why this area remained so undisturbed for many years! There is a great 4.7 miles circular walk starting at the Moon pub which will take 2.5 hrs.

Historic village of Eyam

As you head out of the village towards Stockport on the A623 and about 5 minutes’ drive, you turn off the main road and into the historic village of Eyam. Eyam became famous after the Black Death of 1665 / 1666. After an outbreak of the plague was discovered (spread from a parcel of wet cloth that had fleas) and sent from London to the local village tailor, the village reacted quickly and decided to reduce the spread of the disease from outside Eyam.  To still get supplies, they set up at the village boundary to pay for goods. They set up troughs filled with vinegar to help kill the disease, so people did not come into contact, and no one was allowed to leave or enter the village. The villagers' actions no doubt saved many lives in the local community, but they did lose 260 villagers out of a population of 800, affecting 76 families.   Today, the medical world uses Eyam as a case study in disease prevention. Why not visit the village museum to learn more about the history? Mompesson’s Well towards Grindleford and the boundary stone towards Stoney Middleton are points where money was left in vinegar for exchange for food and goods, so worth a walk to view these. Also on the edge of the village are the Riley Graves, a poignant spot where 8 members of the same family were buried.

​The Derwent Valley Heritage Way

Discover the beauty and magnificent scenery of this stunning area. You can make your exploration as long or as short as you like; the route is 55 miles long, follows the River Derwent, and lets you start from different sections. The start of the Heritage Way is in Bamford at Ladybower Dam and leads all the way to the finish point in Derby at the Derwent Mouth, where it flows into the River Trent. The nearest section to join the Heritage Way is at Calver, from Stoney Middleton. Easily marked throughout the route by purple and yellow disks to keep you on track. The route follows fields, woodland paths, tracks and sections of pavement and road, so there will be varying climbs and descents throughout, so proper footwear would be advised. The route is ideal for cyclists too.

​Walk the Edges - Curbar, Froggatt & Baslow

Starting at Curbar Gap, you follow the path to Curbar Edge. Follow the ridge and take in the stunning scenery; it’s a great 7-mile walk, taking approximately 2-3 hrs. The terrain will be mainly uneven so good walking shoes are a must, but you will take in some spectacular sights along the way, including Stoke Flat Circle, 11 stones still in place believed to date back to the Bronze Age. Highland Cattle are known to graze near to Baslow, so look out for these on your travels – but please respect them and have all dogs on leads. A popular landmark is Eagle Stone a large gritstone boulder standing on its own, making it a popular rock-climbing point but in the past was a testing ground for young men to prove their fitness for marriage! Lastly close to Eagles Stone is Nelson’s Monument a gritstone column erected in 1810 in honour of Lord Nelson with 3 large rocks nearby known as the Three Ships- each having a name carved into them. Makes a great sheltered spot for a picnic stop!
