Nestled on the edge of the Peak District, Buxton is one of Derbyshire’s most captivating spa towns, with a history stretching back over two thousand years. These origins can be traced back to the Roman era, when a settlement called “Aquae Arnemetiae” was established. The Romans drawn here by the healing properties of the town’s natural thermal springs.

No history of Buxton would be complete without the mention of its most celebrated visitor, Mary Queen of Scots. Visiting between 1573 and 1584, she visited Buxton multiple times while imprisoned under the custody of the Earl of Shrewsbury, seeking relief from her chronic rheumatism in the town’s famous waters.

Her visits put Buxton firmly on the map as a destination of natural significance. This was a reputation that only grew when the grand Georgian Crescent was commissioned in 1780, by the fifth Duke of Devonshire.
