The 7th century, boar crested Anglo-Saxton helmet was excavated by Thomas Bateman in 1848 on this site and was the first Angle Saxon helmet to be discovered. The helmet is known for its unique boar crest and a Christian cross on the nasal piece, reflecting a blend of pagan and Christian symbolism common in that era.
The Benty Grange helmet and hanging bowl were found here, in the centre of the driveway there is evidence of this site- we do politely ask to not let children climb over this area. Benty Grange is steeped in history, the prehistoric site of Arbor Low, is set amid high moorland above Benty Grange and is also walk-able.
