Winster and Elton are both picturesque, charming villages, nestled amongst the rolling hills of the glorious Peak District.  

Winster and Elton village may be not widely known to many, but they both offer a superb base to explore the Peak District, with some very scenic walks in the area and charming village pubs, making a great staycation for all the family.  

Nestled amidst the picturesque landscapes of the Peak District, Winster is a charming village that exudes quintessential English charm and rustic allure. Surrounded by rolling hills, lush valleys, and ancient woodlands, this idyllic settlement offers a tranquil escape for nature enthusiasts and city dwellers alike. Winster's quaint stone cottages with their blooming gardens and neatly trimmed hedges line the narrow streets, evoking a sense of timeless beauty and heritage. 

Steeped in history, the village boasts a fascinating array of historic buildings, including the 17th-century Winster Market House at its heart, which stands as a testament to its past significance as a market town.  

Visitors can embark on breath-taking walks, wander along scenic trails, or simply revel in the simple pleasures of village life, savouring homemade treats at cosy tearooms and sipping pints of locally brewed ale at the welcoming village pub. 

With its captivating ambiance and unspoiled natural surroundings, Winster is an enchanting destination that lingers in the hearts of those fortunate enough to experience its serenity.

The Old Bowling Green: This traditional village pub is a popular spot for both residents and tourists seeking a cozy atmosphere and a selection of real ales. The interior is adorned with rustic charm, featuring wooden beams and a crackling fireplace, making it an ideal place to unwind after a day of exploring the Peak District. The pub often hosts community events and live music, adding to its vibrant ambiance.

The Miners Standard: Situated in the heart of Winster, The Miners Standard is another beloved pub with a rich history dating back to the 16th century. With a focus on serving locally sourced food and a wide range of drinks, including cask ales, this pub offers a warm welcome and a chance to mingle with friendly locals. The beer garden provides a delightful setting to enjoy a refreshing beverage during the warmer months.

Winster and its surrounding areas in the Peak District offer a plethora of delightful walks, catering to a range of abilities and interests. Here are a few noteworthy walks you can explore:

Winster Village Circular Walk: A gentle and picturesque stroll that allows you to soak in the charm of Winster itself. This circular route takes you through the village's historic streets, passing by lovely stone cottages, the Market House, and the local church. It's a great way to get acquainted with the village's character and history.

Winster and Stanton Moor: This moderately challenging walk takes you through the village and then up to Stanton Moor, a fascinating area with ancient stone circles, rock formations, and breathtaking panoramic views. The Cork Stone and Nine Ladies Stone Circle are among the intriguing sights along the route.

Limestone Way: For more experienced walkers, the Limestone Way offers a longer trek passing through Winster. This trail spans approximately 46 miles and showcases the region's diverse landscapes, limestone cliffs, and serene countryside.

Robin Hood's Stride: Not far from Elton and Winster, you'll find Robin Hood's Stride, a collection of imposing gritstone rocks. A walk around this area allows you to explore the unique rock formations and enjoy stunning vistas of the surrounding countryside.

The High Peak Trail: This former railway line turned walking and cycling trail is easily accessible from Winster and offers a relatively flat and easy route. The trail stretches for miles, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll or a longer hike, passing through picturesque scenery along the way.

Elton is located next to Winseter in Derbyshire, about 5 miles northwest of Bakewell, a well-known town in the Peak District and it lies within the Peak District National Park.  Elton Village is a picturesque and charming place, characteristic of many villages in the area.  

Elton lies on a hillside overlooking a rock formation known as Robin Hood's Stride. It lies on the division between gritstone and limestone countryside and there are examples of buildings and walls constructed with both types of stone in the village. It is a popular destination for cyclists and tourists.

While it is a small village, Elton offers a peaceful and scenic environment for visitors and residents alike. It's an excellent base for exploring the nearby Peak District attractions and hiking trails, including Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, and the historical landmark, Minninglow - one of only 3 dark skies sites in Derbyshire.

The village and its surroundings offer various outdoor activities, such as hiking, cycling, and birdwatching, thanks to the nearby countryside and nature reserves.

As with many villages, Elton has a good old traditional pub, The Duke of York Inn, it's normally open from 8.30 pm but we recommend checking ahead before you go. 

There's also the Winster Village shop, where you can stock up on everything you need for your holiday cottage stay in the area.  

From cakes to fresh local goods, frozen meals, farm shop faves, teas, and many homemade delights this little village shop crams a lot in!
