The following comments are taken straight from the guestbook we keep for Rock Mill Apartment 12. Verbatim.
This was our second visit. The apartment complex is ideal for us because of the dog washing station in the boot room which means that we don’t have to worry how muddy or wet our dog gets on the hikes because we know that we can wash and dry her when we get back. The heated lockers are terrific drying our walking boots overnight before using them again the following day. The apartment itself is so clean and tidy, and has everything in the kitchen that we have needed to self cater during our stays in the Peaks. It is positioned centrally so you’re only half an hour or so from all the walks we wanted to do, as well as the wonderful Chatsworth House farm shop (a must visit if you like delicious food and treats!) The receptionist was helpful with recommendations, and the pub just down the road from the apartment is friendly and served superb local real ale. We will be looking to make this an annual stay as it is perfect for us and we absolutely love it. Thank you Rock Mill Apartments.
No washing machine or some where nearby to clean our activities clothes Modern, nice and clean
Wow! What an incredible place to stay. Everything was beautifully furnished, superbly equipped and simply wonderful from start to finish. The heated lockers in the boot room were perfect for drying wet coats and boots overnight and when we had two young children this made a real difference! The added luxuries made this place somewhere we would book again without hesitation. Can’t wait to plan another visit!
Great apartment with all the necessities in a great location! Will definitely be back to explore more of the Peak District!
What a place to stay, conveniently located for a lot of good walks (most within a 25min drive). We did Mam Tor and the great ridge via Elbow Ridge (lovely), and Chee dale gorge circular (lovely nature and views). Having a restaurant right next door is real handy too, but a lot of other good eateries within a 20min drive too. The spar shop (and its a good one) is literally a 5min drive.
Lovely apartment we really enjoyed our stay. Has a quality feel about it. Amenities were spot on and has some nice touches like lockers and wash stations.
Perfect location for all the surrounding areas, Chatsworth house, Eyam, Bakewell and more. Restaurants and good pubs very close by. The apartment itself has been beautifully done out with everything you need, very well thought out.
Fantastic location, 15 minutes or less from several peak district destinations including Bakewell, Chatsworth, Eyam, and Padley Gorge. Very cozy but modern accommodation, incredibly quiet floors so you can't hear people above, the windows have good seals to mute road sounds. Nothing creaks, the shower is nice and hot, duvets and pillows are comfortable. Mattresses are a bit hard but still comfortable. Bring extra toilet rolls though and kitchen towels as only 2 toilet rolls provided and no kitchen towels which wasn't an issue for us as we're usually prepared. The smart TV allows you to watch your Netflix or prime shows, sofas are comfy, all the amenities you might want (minus pizza trays but we bring those as well). Honestly can't recommend these properties enough, really enjoyed our stay.
Lovely clean apartment which still had that new feel and great restaurant
Absolutely perfect place for a walking holiday with a dog. The apartment was stunning, equipped with everything that we needed and felt calm, spacious and homely. Having the dog washing station downstairs was brilliant and enabled us to do everything we wanted to without having to worry about muddy paws. The apartment building is located perfectly, with only short drives to everywhere we wanted to go. We definitely plan to come back and stay here again, and would thoroughly recommend it to others.

We had he most amazing stay ! It was a last minute booking and we were so pleased with our choice. The apartment was modern, clean and well furnished. The local amenities were great with good options for food ( local Curry house was 5 star ) The building has a concierge "Jackie " who was so friendly and helpful. We look forward to coming back soon.
Wonderful bank holiday weekend spent in apartment 12. Well appointed, comfy beds, great location. Delicious breakfast in the Cupola next door!
Great few days away, with the apartment being the perfect base. Very well finished with everything you'd need for a few days away. Can't fault the apartment, the booking/check-in process. Only minor comment would be the lack of somewhere to let the dog stretch her legs.
Public review An excellent place to go, everything is as in the forums and new. If you go with a dog that was not our case it is perfect. Just a paste that there is no washing machine or laundry in the unit....
A very well equipped apartment and supporting facilities- its been designed and built by someone who has clearly thought everything out and cares about the final finish
Great facilities. Clean and tidy but the bed, unfortunately, was rock hard. I know bed’s are a personal preference. Apart from that we had a great stay
We enjoy the stay very much. The place is neat and tidy, good location to many spots in Peak District, though it will need a washing machine if one wants a long stay.
Lovely property in a great location, close to beautiful walks but also convenient for places to eat out. Very clean and comfortable. Loved that there was an area to clean the dog!
We had a fantastic stay at Rock Mill. We were in apartment 12 and really couldn’t fault it. The balcony is a real sun trap and we really enjoyed sitting out there in the evening enjoying a drink. Our apartment was on a corner and had a lovely aspect. Windows from 2 sides also meant the apartment was really bright and airy. They really have thought of everything - facilities inside the apartment and in the communal areas (dog washing, bbq area etc) were absolutely first class. We didn’t want to leave!
Amazing place to stay in the Peaks! Such a comfortable high spec apartment in a great location, my friends and I had a fabulous time!
Ideal for dog owners, walkers & cyclists. Cleaning stations for bikes, boots & even dogs with hairdryer. FOC heated lockers with code locks are great for storage & drying out boots/clothes overnight. Bike storage included air pump, tool station with CTV & requires room key fob to gain access. Great security.
Really friendly on the front desk and just lovely apartment with all the right equipment in the kitchen for a few days away, thank you we had such a lovely time
We loved our stay here, very proactive with entry information and a really great information brochure. Accommodation is brand new and very tastefully decorated with everything you could need. Lovely curry house 5 mins down the road and a great restaurant next door for breakfast. We had a room at the back of the building with a balcony, it was very quiet and we all slept well, and definitely come back again, thanks for a great stay :-)
Peak Venues is a great place for walkers, cyclists and dog owners with good facilities including a drying room, dog shower, bike cleaning, and boot washing facilities. Apartment was very clean and well equipped, really comfy beds, great shower. Short walk to great pub in village, really good Indian takeaway, which will deliver. Lovely walks from the door.
Great spot for hiking
Pristine accommodation in an excellent location.
The apartment was beautifully decorated and it thoughtfully set out. We felt at home the minute we arrived. Inside the apartment, the amity areas (dog and dry down area complete with treats, dog wash and poo bags) were immaculate, as was the boot wash and grounds outside. We were able to walk from the venue without needing the car. We walked a loop to Stoney Middleton, Frogatt, Grindleford, the outskirts of Hathersage and Eyam. It’s a shame that the pub doesn’t serve food until 6.30pm on the weekend as the Moon Inn used to be a favourite of ours. The local curry house saved the day, delivered quickly and food was tasty. We hadn’t realised that there was a restaurant next to the venue. We’ll be sure to try that next time. We’ll definitely be back.
Great weekend

Known for its abundance of differing Limestone climbs Stoney Middleton boasts 450+ it is an extremely popular place to tackle some of the best climbs in the area, attracting hundreds of keen climbers. Heading out of the village on the A623 towards Tideswell / Stockport the main climbs are on the right-hand side of the road – with a layby close by to be able to park up easily. The roadside crags are impressive with buttresses up to 50m high and are known to be some of the hardest climbs in the world. There are many varying grades and only suitable for the most experienced climbers and research is necessary before heading out.
Also located near to the best climbing spots are plenty of caves to explore, preplanning is vital as some entrances do not lead to anywhere. Many of the caves are impressive and extensive and do involve tight squeezes in places so definitely not for the inexperienced cavers- research is key. To name but a few the best ones to visit are Castle Buttress, Ivy Green, Cliffstile Vein, Fingals Cave, Carlswalk Cavern, Merlin Mine all in the village of Stoney Middleton– there are plenty more to explore and as a word of warning due to the numerous entrances no one should enter without the proper equipment, experience and pre planned knowledge.
The heritage trails of Stoney Middleton lead you on a remarkable journey of discovery. Two short walks in and around the village, take in panoramic vistas of the stunning Peak District National Park, along with its rich and fascinating heritage. Quaint back streets, listed buildings, past industries, fascinating folklore and legends, along with famous crags and caves make these trails a must do. There is a detailed map which includes QR codes linking to further information and are available next door at The Cupola Visitor Centre.
The Cupola Visitor Centre houses a small, permanent 'Life in a Gorge Exhibition' which tells the remarkable story, beginning with the geological events that formed the dramatic limestone gorge which dominates the site, and in turn, lead to thousands of years of industrialisation, extracting the rich minerals that the stone contains. Within the Visitor Centre there are various information boards and video presentations covering all aspects of the village's heritage and history. Entrance to the exhibition is by donation and includes a free Heritage and trail Map of Stoney Middleton and Eyam. Exhibition opening hours are 10am-4pm. Other tourist information and leaflets are also available, providing details for other local facilities in the area.
What better area to experience the amazing landscape and abundance of different routes that all lead from the doorstep including Black Harry trails. The Peak District can cater for all biking abilities, whether you want a steady family ride, gentler lane rides or tough climbs and longer routes - have a good look at the area and then plan your route. Passing through many of the quaint villages tucked away – some even offering a welcome refreshment stop, you will struggle to know what to concentrate on whilst riding will it be the pavements or trails ahead of the stunning scenery all around you!
One of the littler known dales in the Peak District, making it a real hidden gem. A limestone valley, covering an area of 230 acres, the hills are made up of carboniferous limestone which were created about 330 million years ago, when Britain lay under a shallow tropical sea close to the equator, many fossilised skeletons of tiny sea creatures can still be found in the rocks today. Entering the dale via tall Ash trees it opens to a deep valley with steep sided grassy slopes. Enjoy a gentle and scenic stroll enjoying the beautiful wildflowers and various species of butterflies and birds. With the legacy of Black Harry, the highwayman, still present to this day with Black harry gate standing in the dale at the end of Black Harry Lane. It is said that on dark nights galloping hooves can be heard over the moors - maybe this is why this area remained so undisturbed for many years! There is a great 4.7 miles circular walk starting at the Moon pub which will take 2.5 hrs.
As you head out of the village towards Stockport on the A623 and about 5 minutes’ drive you turn off the main road and into the historic village of Eyam. Eyam became famous after the Black Death of 1665 / 1666. After an outbreak of the plague was discovered (spread from a parcel of wet cloth, that had fleas) was sent from London to the local village tailor, the village reacted quickly and decided to try to reduce the spread of the disease from outside Eyam. To be able to still get supplies they set up at the boundary of the village points to be able to pay for goods. These were troughs filled with vinegar to help kill off the disease so contact between people was not made plus no one was allowed to leave or come into the village. The actions of the villagers no doubt saved many lives in the local community but did lose 260 villagers out of a population of 800 affecting 76 families. With the use of these quarantine techniques, the medical world today uses Eyam as a case study in the prevention of disease. Why not visit the Museum in the village to gain more knowledge of the history. Mompesson’s Well towards Grindleford and the boundary stone towards Stoney Middleton are points where money was left in vinegar for exchange for food and goods so worth a walk to view these. Also on the edge of the village are the Riley Graves a poignant spot where 8 members of the same family were buried.
The Derwent Valley Heritage Way
Discover the beauty and magnificent scenery of this stunning area. You can make your exploring as long or as short as you like, the route in total is 55 miles long following the river Derwent enabling you to start from different sections. The start of the Heritage way is in Bamford at Ladybower Dam and leads all the way to the finish point in Derby to the Derwent Mouth where it flows into the river Trent. The nearest section to join the heritage way would be at Calver from Stoney Middleton. Easily marked throughout the route by purple and yellow disks to keep you on track. The route follows fields, woodland paths, tracks and sections of pavement and road so there will be varying climbs and descents throughout so proper footwear would be advised. The route is ideal for cyclists too.
Walk the Edges - Curbar, Froggatt & Baslow
Starting at Curbar gap you follow the path that then leads to Curbar Edge. Following the ridge and taking in the stunning scenery it’s a great 7-mile walk, taking approximately 2-3 hrs. The terrain will be mainly uneven so good walking shoes are a must, but you will take in some spectacular sights along the way, including Stoke Flat Circle, 11 stones still in place believed to date back to the Bronze Age. Highland Cattle are known to graze near to Baslow so look out for these on your travels – but please respect them and have all dogs on leads. A popular landmark is Eagle Stone a large gritstone boulder standing on its own, making it a popular rock-climbing point but in the past was a testing ground for young men to prove their fitness for marriage! Lastly close to Eagles Stone is Nelson’s Monument a gritstone column erected in 1810 in honour of Lord Nelson with 3 large rocks nearby known as the Three Ships- each having a name carved into them. Makes a great sheltered spot for a picnic stop!
