Bedrooms and Bathrooms

There are 5 individually designed bedrooms each having its own country cottage feel. 3 can be made into twins or doubles, there is a fixed bunk bedroom, great for kids and adults alike and a further fixed double bedroom.

There is hanging space behind each stand alone cheval mirror in 3 of the bedrooms (rooms 1,2 & 5) and wardrobe space in bedrooms 3 and 4

Kitchen and Cooking

There is a spacious country kitchen in the hub of the property, finished to a high standard of wooden fixtures and granite worktops.  There is a large central island so ideal to get everyone involved with the food or drink preparations.  A well equipped kitchen with a Leisure Range oven with gas burners, American style fridge freezer, dishwasher and loads of storage space.

There is a small round breakfast table seating 4 which is ideal for those early risers and a further soft seating area with sofa and high back chair cosily facing the Inglenook fireplace that houses a gas log burner. 

There is an additional utility room leading from the dining room which has a washing machine, tumble dryer, sink and further storage, an ideal space should you have dogs staying as there is a door leading to the courtyard with outside tap just outside to hose down any muddy paws.


Dining Room

Leading from the kitchen and down one step is the dining room - with wooden bi-fold doors this space would be fantastic in the warmer months when you can throw open the doors and enjoy al fresco dining overlooking the pretty courtyard.  Equally cosy in winter the opulent finish here provides a luxurious warm space perfect for a celebration meal with comfy leather-bound chairs and fabulous table accessories. 

The Dining Room has a large wooden table seating 8 comfortably with an additional 2 chairs to seat 10. The leather-bound chairs and opulent table accessories. The room has been finished with an eye-catching wallpaper which lends itself wonderfully to the whole room's decor.

Living Area

Leading from the stone-tiled hallway you enter via a large wooden door to the left, into the most stunning living rooms. Due to the age and character of the property, this room has been transformed into a wonderfully cosy living space and has been decked out with luxurious furnishings and plush details. 

The furniture is rich with bold colours and textures and creates a really snug feeling in the room. Centrally heated throughout means you will be toasty and warm and the wooden floors, exposed stone walls and soft lighting make it a  wonderful room to spend time with your guests cosying up in front of the welcoming log burner. There is also a smart TV in here so it's a great space for hunkering down and watching films with the family.

Garden and Outside Space

You enter the property through white double gates and a cattle grid just off the main road, the approach is via a gravelled driveway and Millstone Barn is tucked away to the right-hand side, and accessed through 2 black cast iron gates.  The property has a spacious courtyard in front of the barn with ample space for parking.

There is a raised, sheltered, decked seating area, a lockable outbuilding for storing bikes, and gravelled area with a raised paved seating area. To the side of the property is an additional parking space and a gate leading to the rear. Here you will find the pretty cottage garden which blooms all through the summer months and is laid to lawn on varying levels accessed by small steps up or down. With established planting and hedging it's a private garden with open countryside fields beyond the walls. There is also a handy outside tap to wash down muddy paws or boots.

Property Information

Our standard arrival and departure times are:

  • ​4pm on the day of arrival
  • By 10am on the day of departure 

Please do respect these times as they are in place to allow the housekeeping teams enough time to thoroughly clean the property before and after your stay



  • Please remove any high heeled and dirty shoes on entry
  • Please do not bring any candles, tea lights or incense sticks as they are not allowed at the property
  • Please no fireworks or Chinese lanterns
  • No Drones
  • No smoking or vaping inside the property. Vaping can trigger fire alarms.
  • We ask that any outside socialising to please be brought inside by 10 pm. We kindly ask that neighbours and residents are not disturbed after this time, for more information please see our Noise and Behaviour Policy
  • No glitter please, as even the most eco-friendly kind is impossible to remove from soft furnishings and hard wearing floors
  • No Karaoke machines of any type

Ashover and the surrounding area

Millstone Barn is located in Ashover a pretty village tucked away close to the charming market towns of Matlock, and Chesterfield which is famous for it's crooked church spire. The village has won Calor Village of the year on 2 separate occasions. It has 3 great pubs all serving food, a tuck shop selling coffees and homemade cakes and snacks, a butcher and a small cafe which is open 7 days a week. Just outside the village on the main road and a few minute's drive is a great Farm Shop ideal for trying some lovely local produce. 

There are many beautiful walks right from the door, along rivers and streams and through woodland and fields. It is also a great location for road cycling, with many quiet country lanes to enjoy and mountain biking is very popular too so don't forget to bring your bikes! There is lockable bike storage at the property.
You are also on the doorstep to the market town of Bakewell - only a 20-minute drive and Chatsworth is well worth a visit and great for a family day out.  

There is a handy milk vending machine near The Black Swan Pub - ideal if you run out of milk in the evenings

Directions

Directions to Millstone Barn from Matlock (9 miles)

  • ​From the centre of Matlock at the Crown Square roundabout carry on straight across onto Causeway Lane A615
  • At the small painted roundabout turn left just before Maazi Indian Restaurant, onto Steep Turnpike - carry on up the hill.
  • Turn Left onto the A632 Chesterfield Road and keep on this road for about 9 miles. This same road will then lead to Amber Lane
  • Go passed The Kelstedge Pub on your right and turn right onto Ashover Road the B6036 signposted Ashover
  • Continue on this road you will come to a sharp bend in the road to your left so please be careful as it is quite narrow too.
  • Carry on passed the Church on your left and as you drop down the hill the first driveway on your right is the entrance to Millstone Farm, this is cobbled with white gates, turn right here
  • Go over the cattle grid and follow thelong driveway that bears to the right.  
  • Millstone Barn is right at the top of the driveway and to the right of the other properties on site. 
  • Drive through the black iron gates.
  •  You have arrived at Millstone Barn


​From Bakewell:

  • ​From the centre of town head out towards Matlock on the A6 onto Haddon Road, stay on this road until you go passed The Grouse and Claret on your left then take the next turning on the left signposted Beeley, Baslow Chatsworth onto Chatsworth Road
  • Go past the turning on your left for Peak Village and take the next right onto Chesterfield Road
  • This road starts with some tight bends and is all uphill so please take it steady
  • Keep on this road until you get to a small junction with a cottage on your right and a Give Way sign - continue straight ahead
  • Continue on this road until you get to another small junction with a Give Way sign where you can turn left or right or go straight across - take the road that goes straight across
  • Carry on this road until to get to a main junction with a signpost for Matlock and Kelstedge - turn right here onto the A632
  • Keep on this road until you pass Marsh Green Farm Shop on your left then take the next left Signposted Ashover on the B036
  • Continue on this road and you will come to a sharp bend in the road to the left so please be careful as it is quite narrow too.
  • Carry on passed the church on your left and as you drop down the hill the first driveway on your right is the entrance to Millstone Farm, this is the cobbled entrance with white gates and a cattle grid.
  • Follow the driveway that bears to the right
  • Millstone Barn is right at the top on the right hand side of the other properties on site

From Chesterfield

  • ​From the Lordsmill Roundabout head onto the A619 signposted Bakewell / Buxton / Matlock / Chatsworth onto Markham Road
  • At the traffic light take the left hand turn onto Park Road (you should have the shopping complex on your left) carry on up this road
  • Turn left onto Boythorpe Road carry on and then take the 3rd exit of the roundabout onto Whitecoats Lane the A632 this then leads into Matlock Road
  • Do not turn off this road you will then see a sign for Kelstedge 
  • Keep on this road until you pass Marsh Green Farm Shop on your left then take the next left Signposted Ashover on the B036
  • Continue on this road and you will come to a sharp bend in the road to the left so please be careful as it is quite narrow too.

  • Poet's Corner - Ashover, only a short walk  from the property, real ales, open fires, dog friendly, hearty food served lunch time to evenings. Dog Friendly.
  • The Crispin Inn - Ashover, located in the centre of the village, country pub, with old world charm, serves home cooked food at lunch time and evenings. Dog friendly.
  • The Black Swan - Ashover, within the centre of the village - offering wholesome home cooked food, with all your pub classics, a Gluten Free and vegetarian menu too. Dog Friendly
  • The White Horse - Woolley Moor - 5 minute drive away but is walkable during the day - serving fabulous local produce dishes alongside special boards.
  • The Kelstedge - Ashover, on the main Chesterfield Road before you turn for Ashover, 4 minute drive or 20 minute walk, country pub set in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside. Family, dog and muddy boots friendly, its a great stop off to sample the local ales and fabulous real pub food. 
  • The Red Lion- Stanedge, 8 minute drive from the property, tucked away on the edge of the Peak National Park, offering fabulous seasonal dishes, lunch and evening menus, enjoy the outdoor seating in the warmer months or nestle down in front of the open fires in the cooler months.
  • Devonshire Arms - Beeley-  a little further away from the property with a 20 minute drive but certainly worth it.  A Traditional pub set in a quiet village not far from Bakewell and Chatsworth and is part of the Chatsworth estate. With its country charm and welcoming rooms you can enjoy local produce served alongside local ales, a great selection of gins and fine wines. Dog friendly
  • The Grouse & Claret - Rowsley, 15 minute drive away, pub classics with some modern twists, serving locally produced food. Outdoor seating area for those warmer months, with children's play area plus Dog friendly too

  • Stones - Matlock, 10 minute drive, amazing location and venue. Offering set menus at lunch and dinner and seasonal choices throughout the year. Set in a relaxed and cosy restaurant. Booking essential.
  • Maazi Indian Restaurant - Matlock, 10 minute drive, authentic Indian Cuisine, lovely venue and great food.
  • The Balti- Matlock Bath, 15 minute drive away. A warm welcome and great menu awaits at this authentic Indian cuisine restaurant. 
  • Jeera Restaurant - Crich - 18 minute drive away. Located in a pretty village, you have to supply your own drinks so a great value for money place to eat. Friendly staff and worth a trip out.
  • Lovage- Bakewell, 20 minute drive, owned and run by former Great British Menu finalist Lee Smith, this restaurant offers fine British dining. Booking essential
  • Piedaniels - Bakewell, 20 minute drive, family run restaurant specialising in French Cuisine 
  • The Woodyard- Bakewell, 20 minute drive, offering sharing platters, pizzas, pies, pastas, steaks and burgers you will be spoilt for choice. All ingredients are sourced locally. We recommend to book in advance.

  • Stamp Cafe - Ashover, serving breakfast and lunches with a selection of baked products, quiches, sandwiches and cakes, all washed down with first class coffee located within a post office!
  • Marsh Green Farm Shop, Ashover, just a few minutes drive from the property towards the main Chesterfield road rather than towards the village, cafe, deli and butchery.  A great one stop shop to try some of the locally produced products. 
  • The Old Smithy - Beeley - 20 minute drive, relaxed and friendly atmosphere serving locally sourced produce. Why not enjoy a full English Breakfast, a light lunch, afternoon tea or just a coffee and a cake. Set within the Chatsworth Estate so an ideal place to visit whilst out exploring. Fully licensed too.
  • Edensor Tea Rooms- Edensor (Near Chatsworth), 25 minute drive, serving breakfast, lunches and afternoon teas, and all using locally sourced produce. It's a great location in a pretty part of the Chatsworth Estate with chocolate box style houses. Fully licensed too.
  • Chatsworth Farm Shop & Cafe - Chatsworth, 25 minutes away, a fabulous farm shop offering  a great selection of local produce and tucked away behind this is the cafe. Serving breakfasts and lunches, alongside cakes and sandwiches, with a great selection of hot and cold drinks.

  • Sauced Here Fantastic selection of homemade prepared meals from local chefs/cooks - great for large groups. They also provide a full basket of groceries from local producers that can replace a supermarket delivery.

1. Chatsworth House and Park

No visit to the Peak District would be complete without visiting the fabulous Chatsworth House. At Chatsworth there is something to do for every member of the family. The Farmyard and Adventure playground is a brilliant day out for children of all ages - with animal handling, milking demonstrations and daily activities, plus a woodland adventure playground with slides, trampolines and more!Then there is obviously the house itself, steeped with history it’s one of Britain’s greatest stately homes and has been passed down through 16 generations of the Cavendish family. The gardens are equally as impressive as the house, over 100 acres and as well and the beautiful flowers and plants, there are giant water features and sculptures dotted around.

​2. Gullivers Kingdom and The Heights of Abraham

10 minutes away is the popular attraction of Gulliver's Kingdom, great for children aged between 2 - 13 years, you can easily spend a full day exploring the site and enjoying the numerous rides available. Set on the hillside of Matlock Bath the location itself boasts great views. You have various themed areas within the park, from Western World, Pirates Play Area, Lost World of Dinosaurs and a log flume. Why not bring your own picnic or eat at the various eating spots throughout.

Gulliver's Kingdom

A couple of minutes away from Gulliver's Kingdom are The Heights or Abraham, a cable car ride taking you high above the valley letting you enjoy the stunning views. At the summit you can enter the 2 caves, Masson and Rutland Cavern, experience the day in the life of a 17th century miner from the guided tours available. There are also two play areas with slides, climbing walls, rope walks and a range of activities to keep you active all day.

​3. Carsington Water

Carsington Water is a 2 mile long reservoir managed by Severn Trent Water which is only a 30 minute drive from the property. There is plenty to see and do including cycling/walking around the reservoir there are two routes, a 3 mile route perfect for little legs (and big ones too) and an 8 mile cycling route for those who want a bit more of a challenge. There is also the opportunity for bird watching, fishing and water sports, including kayaking, windsurfing, sailing and paddle boarding. A large modern visitor centre at the reservoir includes a restaurant, shops and water sports centre. There is also large outdoor area suitable for picnics and BBQ facilities for those warm summer days and a fantastic children’s outdoor play area for the little ones to enjoy.

​4. Crich Tram Museum

An award-winning tramway museum, buy a ticket and take unlimited trams rides all day long a mile long track with various stops including the period village scene, where you can step back in time and along the recreated street. Enjoy a drink in the recreated 'Red Lion Pub' or explore one of the exhibitions in the recreated 'Derby Assembly Rooms'.  The woodland walk and sculpture trail is great for stretching the legs and to take in some amazing views over the Amber Valley.  Children will also enjoy the indoor and outdoor play areas

​5. Hardwick Hall

A 25 minute drive to the stunning Elizabethan Hardwick Hall, now owned by The National Trust. Built by Bess of Hardwick in the late 1500's who had the greatest vision to build such a building. Her descendants, the Dukes of Devonshire and their success preserved Hardwick and in the 20th century the Devonshire's ensured that the hall building was passed on to the nation with its splendour intact. With woodland walks, for all abilities and parks to explore it's a great family day out.

  • 2 x High Chairs
  • 2 x Travel Cots we provide basic travel cot's that comply with BSI. Please note that due to health and safety reasons, you will need to bring cot linen and any extra padding you require over and above the lightly padded standard base that is supplied by the manufacturer.
  • Fresh linen with beds made up to your request on arrival
  • Fresh Towels - hand towel in each bathroom/en suite and a bath towel per guest
  • Log Burner, in the Lounge.  We supply a complimentary basket of logs on your arrival to get you started. We cannot provide any lighting equipment due to Health & Safety so you must bring this with you.

Parking

  • There is space for 5 cars, 2 cars to the left hand side of the cottage parking one in front of the other and 2 maybe 3 on the gravelled area in front of the house and there is an overflow space to the right just outside of the gates in the slight pull in, if you really need this.
  • We do ask you to park within the gates though so not to obstruct any access for the other properties on site
  • 1 x 7kw Smart EV charging point - located on the left hand side property wall in front of the lattice fence and black gate that leads to the back garden
  • For reasons of both safety and property insurance, under no circumstances should you use the domestic plug sockets in the property to charge any other electric vehicle. Our domestic supply in the property does not have the capacity or set up to support EV charging. Please use this link, that you may find useful for the local nearby charging stations.

Property Quirks

  • From the gravelled parking area there is a slight stone step up to the property
  • 3 stone steps down to the lockable bike storage
  • Rear garden is on varying levels with plenty of steps
  • Wooden Bi-fold doors in the dining room please do not let children operate these unsupervised
  • French Doors from bedroom 5 leading to the courtyard - there is a small step down from the paved area to the gravel.
  • The main gates at the entrance are electric and open between 6am - 10pm - there is a code to open these if outside of these times.
  • The stairs in the property are wooden and not carpeted so take care if wearing only socks - we advise to take off socks before using the stairs, so not to slip
  • If you are walking to the property from the main gates there is an electric fence to the left of the driveway so please do not let dogs or children run off unsupervised- you are able to use the adjacent smaller drive with the black bollards if you wish to avoid crossing the cattle grid
  • The driveway is not smooth or level so please drive slowly
  • Hanging space behind the stand alone mirrors in bedrooms 1,2 and 5


Dogs

  • We allow 2 dogs and charge £30 per dog for the duration of their stay
  • We do ask for dogs to be kept off all the furniture and out of the bedrooms
  • Please do clear any dog litter from the garden
  • Please do not leave your dog unattended in the property or garden at any time
  • There is a dog bed and blankets in the utility area for your use

Wi-fi is provided free of charge, however, as the Peak District is in a beautiful rural location, sometimes, there can be intermittent Wi-Fi signal that is beyond our control.  We also hope you appreciate that we cannot guarantee Wi-Fi if there are technical issues out of our control
